He was the radio operator on the steamer 'Silverpalm', which was docked at the State Docks at Mobile, Alabama. As he boarded the vessel, he slipped on some timbers and fell overboard, striking his head on the pier as he fell, killing him. The vessel 'Silverpalm' was sunk a year later by the submarine U-371 in the North Atlantic, with the loss of all hands

Son of Angelo Gooding MRCS & LRCP and Mrs. Gooding, of 59 Herth Street, Carsharlton, Surrey. Born Beaufort, South Africa, 12 May 1900. Educated at St. Andrew's College, Grahamstown. From October 1913-December 1918. Passed Junior Certificate in 1916 and would have matriculated in 1918 if there had been no Spanish Flu.
