Frederick Golightly was a brilliant Rhodes Scholar (1911) from Stellenbosch Boys' High School (now Paul Roos Gymnasium) and an Oxford B.A. graduate (Worcester College). He was appointed Lecturer in Applied Mathematics at the Victoria College (now University of Stellenbosch) in 1914. In a December 1914 letter to one of his tutors at Oxford he mentioned that he was trying to get a commission in an "Artillery Regiment", but he eventually attested as a Gunner in the S.A. Heavy Artillery in August 1915. Commemoration stone in Stellenbosch Dutch Reformed Church Cemetery
