Died of wounds, bullet wound in a contact in the Inyanga area, Op Thrasher. Various sticks had been deployed in the commercial wattle plantations in the area. Gus' stick had gone into a plantation workers' compound when they came under mortar and small arms fire from the nearby forest. As Gus was running across the edge of the forest in a clearing that carried electricity pylons, he was fatally wounded. He died during the helicopter casevac flight to hospital
