While on a weekend pass, he was on his way to Sun City and was involved in a private vehicle accident near Boekenhoutsfontein. He died in the crash and the body was burnt beyond recognition

LG Sup 17 April 1917 - "For conspicuous gallantry and devotion to duty. He displayed great courage on several occasions in getting his men and mules through heavy shell fire. He set a splendid example to his men throughout under the most difficult circumstances."
