Col (rt) Graham du Toit Last Post 21 Aug 2026: 05563861E Captain (Instructor) Christiaan Lemmer Smith from 4 Squadron, Atlas MB326M Impala Mk I 529, mid-air with Impala 553 near Pietersburg, age 29. Graham places Smith in 529; ROH has him in Impala #553 colliding with 529 — aircraft assignment left. Unit 85 Combat Flying School left (Graham: 85 Advanced Flying School / 4 Squadron instructor).
25 Sep 2026, Unit2 service-branch sweep: the stored Secondary Unit "Air Force" was CLEARED as a duplicate. It was not a sub-unit, it was a service-branch word repeating what the Branch column already says. Secondary Unit is for sub-units -- a company, a squadron, a commando -- and this record's branch of service is unchanged at "Air Force".

He was based at the Air Force Base in Pietersburg. I believe that it was then called 85 Advanced Flying School. He was killed on 21 August 1973 during a mid-air colission between 2 Impala Mk1's (529 & 553). The other pilots involved was Capt F.R. Van Zyl and 2Lt C. Yates.

He left hehind his wife, Marie and 2 sons, Frank and Gerhard. He was transferred from 12 Squadron just a months before the accident.
