He was a member of the Tactical Platoon of the SADF Horse and Dog Centre, based at M'pacha in the Caprivi during his death. His Tracker dog was Rinty no. W991. Both he and his dog were killed in a night time follow-up operation tracking fresh SWAPO tracks in the Eastern Caprivi and ending up in an ambush. His Platoon commander at the Dog School was Capt. GH Grobler, and his Instructor was Cpl J Rocher.
