Killed in action, during an air attack by MIG 23s on the Calueque dam (50km North of SWA border, Angola). His Buffel was hit by a parachute retarded bomb, killing all eight soldiers from 8 SAI. An Eland armoured car was also hit, killing all 3 crew members

LG Sup 17 September 1917 pg. 9577 - serving with East Surrey Regiment - "For conspicuous gallantry and devotion to duty under heavy shell fire. He was instrumental in saving the lives of several NCOs and men of his company who had been buried in a tunnel by an enemy bombardment. He was severely wounded whilst engaged on this duty."
