Killed in aircraft accident, in Atlas MB326M Impala Mk I #530. On a low-level tactical navigation flight when Impala apparently developed mechanical problems. Could have been caused by a bird strike that could have led to engine failure. Crashed at Krokodilpoort (between Nelspruit and Malelane) on the N4 highway

Notes

The pilots tried to save their aircraft but ejected too late. The pilot died on impact when he landed on a truck on the freeway. Lt. Martin obtained his wings in May 2000 at Central Flying School Langebaanweg. Son of Mr. & Mrs. A. Martin.

Citation

LG Sup 17 September 1917 pg. 9577 - serving with East Surrey Regiment - "For conspicuous gallantry and devotion to duty under heavy shell fire. He was instrumental in saving the lives of several NCOs and men of his company who had been buried in a tunnel by an enemy bombardment. He was severely wounded whilst engaged on this duty."
