Died of wounds, part of a patrol which was sent out to clear a road which ran parallel to the Nhia River. While busy with this, they encountered an enemy patrol and a fire fight ensued, during which he was wounded in the stomach. They could not be withdrawn until the following morning. He was taken to the hospital at Cela but died the following day of his injuries

Citation

LG Sup 17 September 1917 pg. 9577 - serving with East Surrey Regiment - "For conspicuous gallantry and devotion to duty under heavy shell fire. He was instrumental in saving the lives of several NCOs and men of his company who had been buried in a tunnel by an enemy bombardment. He was severely wounded whilst engaged on this duty."
