Died in Aircraft Accident, crashed 2 miles east of Boane, near Lourenco Marques, Mozambique, while busy with rescue operations at the Umbeluzi Pumping Station, in Alouette III #56. They were lifting inflatable rubber boats used in rescue work when the load began swinging wildly and struck the tailrotor. 2 Mozambique Army Corporals and a Sergeant were also killed

LG Sup 17 September 1917 pg. 9577 - serving with East Surrey Regiment - "For conspicuous gallantry and devotion to duty under heavy shell fire. He was instrumental in saving the lives of several NCOs and men of his company who had been buried in a tunnel by an enemy bombardment. He was severely wounded whilst engaged on this duty."
