Son of William Henry and Charlotte Catherine Tiffany (nee Farish), of The Grotto, Rondebosch, Cape of Good Hope, South Africa. Gazetted Lieut. in the Union Defence Force, 1913, from the Military School, Tempe, Bloemfontein. Promoted Capt. (6th Infantry Regt.) Jan., 1915; With official permission he then proceeded to England and was posted to the Royal Fusiliers. Mentioned in a Despatches from General the Rt. Hon. Louis Botha for gallant and distinguished services in the Field in German South-West Africa in 1915. Asst. Military Instructor Kilworth Camp, Ireland. Captain 6th Infantry Regt. MC LG Sup 20 October 1916 - "For conspicuous bravery and devotion to duty on the occasion of a large fire at an ammunition dump. When several casualties had been caused by explosions due to the fire this officer rushed in with Sergt. Maj. Flack, and succeeded in rescuing the wounded at great personal risk.
