The family moved to Glasgow, where Adam became Town Clerk and an acknowledged expert on local government. After attending Kelvinside Academy and Fettes College, John matriculated at the University of Glasgow in 1913 to study for an Arts degree. In his first year he took Ordinary Latin, Greek, and Political Economy. He enjoyed a game of golf and was a member at Douglas Park, Hillfoot, Milngavie.
