Son of William C. Benson and Marion F. Benson; husband of Mary H. Benson, of Edinburgh. Served in Boer War with Lovat Scouts, in 1906 Rebellion with Natal Police, with Natal Carbineers in German South West Africa, later as a Captain in Royal Horse Artillery in WW1. Turned down for active service in WW2 because of his age he persisted and got through with 1st RDLI. Taken prisoner at Tobruk.
