Son of Benjamin Freakes and of Blanche Eliza Freakes (nee Dainton), of Durban, Natal, South Africa. M.A. Rhodes Scholar. Educated at Maritzburg College, Pietermaritzburg, Natal, South Africa and at Rhodes University, in Grahamstown, South Africa. Was an English rugby union international. Born and bred in South Africa, he played first-class cricket with Eastern Province before going to England. Freakes attended Oxford University, and made his debut for England on the 15 January 1938, against Wales.
