Cause of Death
Died in aircraft accident, on a flight out of Port Elizabeth. The canopy hinge of his Impala broke resulting in the locking mechanism impacting his helmet and either rendering him unconscious or killing him instantly. This occurred at approx. 11,000 AGL and terminated in an almost vertical impact with the ground on the farm "Welgevonden", between Steytlerville and Uitenhage, in Atlas MB326M Impala Mk I #465

Citation

LG Sup 17 September 1917 pg. 9577 - serving with East Surrey Regiment - "For conspicuous gallantry and devotion to duty under heavy shell fire. He was instrumental in saving the lives of several NCOs and men of his company who had been buried in a tunnel by an enemy bombardment. He was severely wounded whilst engaged on this duty."
