Son of Alex Charles and Alice Catherine Watson (nee Knox), of Durban, Natal, South Africa. Born Amatikulu, Zululand. Educated Eshowe Government School. Cadet Draft 1920-30. Alfred William Knox Watson joined the British India Line as Cadet on leaving Genearl Botha, and passed his Second Mate's examination. In 1935 he joined the RAF and after gaining his wings was posted to the Coastal Command (Flying Boat) Service, where he served for some time in Malta, until the beginning of the war, when he was transferred to Gilbraltar and promoted to Lieutenant.
