Educated at Gill College, Somerset East. After Bothie apprenticed to Bullard King Line. In 1926, awarded the Royal Humane Society Honorary Testimonial for saving life in the shark-infested seas of Mauritius. Ex-Cadet of the South African Training Ship General Botha
