Son of John Leigh Goldie McCarthy, and Frances Olivia McCarthy, of Barrie, Ontario, Canada. Served with the Canadian contingent in the Boer War. Returned to Africa serve with the South African Constabulary. He returned to Canada one last time to serve in the Royal North West Mounted Police in Saskatchewan. He then returned to Africa where he bought a large farm in Rhodesia.
